The story

Roughfort Heritage & Cultural Preservation Society is delivering a series of three community talks focusing on men’s mental health, well-being, resilience and the importance of connection.

The series brings together well-known figures from the Northern Ireland football community to share their experiences and encourage open, positive conversations around mental health and well-being.

A Great Start with Michael Boyd OBE

The first event in the series took place on Thursday 10 September 2026 at Hydepark War Memorial Orange Hall, Mallusk, with guest speaker Michael Boyd OBE.

Michael delivered an engaging talk entitled “The Power of Sport, Community & Well-being”, exploring how sport, community involvement and positive social connections can support mental well-being and help build resilience.

The evening provided an informal and welcoming environment for those attending to listen, share conversation and reflect on the important role that community and connection can play in everyday life.

RHCPS thanks Michael Boyd OBE for giving his time and sharing his experiences, and everyone who attended and helped make the first evening a success.

Coming Up – Pat McGibbon

The second talk takes place on Thursday 8 October 2026 at 7:30pm, when RHCPS welcomes former Manchester United and Northern Ireland international footballer Pat McGibbon.

Pat will present “Mental Health & Building Resilience”, sharing a personal story of resilience, mental well-being, overcoming challenges and supporting others.

Coming Up – Gary McAlister

The final talk in the series takes place on Thursday 12 November 2026 at 7:30pm with Gary McAlister, Chairman of the Amalgamation of Official Northern Ireland Supporters Clubs.

Gary’s talk, “My Football Journey”, will explore football, community, leadership and the importance of connection and well-being.

Both upcoming events will be held at Hydepark War Memorial Orange Hall, 106 Mallusk Road, Mallusk, Newtownabbey, BT36 4QE. Admission is free, refreshments will be provided and everyone is welcome. No booking is required.

The Men’s Mental Health & Well-being Talk Series is supported by the Public Health Agency through Impact Network NI.
