Roughfort Heritage and Cultural Music Education Programme
Free flute and drumming tuition helped local people learn and strengthen traditional musical skills.
2022–2023

The story
During 2022 and 2023, RHCPS delivered a programme of free flute and drumming tuition at Hydepark War Memorial Orange Hall.
The programme gave local people the opportunity to learn a traditional musical instrument, improve existing skills and take part in a welcoming shared cultural activity.
Ten-week tuition programmes were delivered for flute and drumming. Sessions were held in the evening and welcomed beginners as well as participants wishing to build confidence and improve their technique.
Flute and drumming have long formed part of the musical and cultural life of communities across Ulster. By making tuition available locally and free of charge, the project helped keep those practical traditions active and accessible.
The programme was also about social connection. Participants learned together in a relaxed group setting, developed confidence and formed relationships through a shared interest in music.
The project also generated interest beyond the immediate group, with local community pages sharing the programme and helping publicise the free tuition opportunities.
RHCPS gratefully acknowledges the support of the Ulster-Scots Agency, whose assistance helped make the programme possible.
