The story

Roughfort Heritage and Cultural Preservation Society brought local residents together to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day with an Act of Remembrance and community BBQ.

The event was created to honour the sacrifices made during the Second World War, remember local service and give people of all ages an opportunity to reflect on the peace and freedoms enjoyed today.

The programme included a respectful remembrance ceremony and wreath-laying, followed by a community BBQ. Historic display panels highlighted local wartime stories and helped connect the national anniversary with the experiences of families from Roughfort, Hydepark and the surrounding district.

The gathering after the ceremony gave residents time to talk, share memories and strengthen community connections. Volunteers supported the event from planning and setup through to hospitality and the final clear-up.

RHCPS thanks everyone who attended and contributed to the occasion. The Society also gratefully acknowledges the support of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in helping to deliver the event.
