The story

RHCPS delivered a community road safety awareness campaign in response to concerns raised by residents about speeding traffic through Roughfort.

The village is approached from faster rural roads, but once motorists enter Roughfort they are travelling through a residential community where children, pedestrians, families, agricultural vehicles and local traffic all share narrow roads. In several places there are limited or no footpaths.

A series of high-visibility signs was installed at key locations throughout the area. Messages included “Slow Down in Roughfort”, “Respect Our Village – Drive Safe”, “No Footpaths – Share the Road”, “Expect HGVs, Tractors and Machinery”, “Rural Roads – Expect the Unexpected” and “Kill Your Speed – Not a Child”.

A team of eight local volunteers carried out the installation on Thursday 26 March 2026. Awareness leaflets were also produced to explain the campaign and reinforce the importance of respecting the 40mph speed limit.

The project forms part of the Society’s wider commitment to community wellbeing, practical local action and making Roughfort a safer place for everyone who lives in or travels through the village.

RHCPS thanks the Policing and Community Safety Partnership and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for supporting the campaign.
